Goulburn Valley Water will continue working to keep safety at forefront of the business following a hearing into an incident in Mooroopna that occurred in 2021.

A wastewater operator suffered a serious injury to their finger while cleaning a screw press and inlet screen. As a result, WorkSafe Victoria issued one charge of failing to provide or maintain a work environment that was safe and without risks to health for employees.

GVW pleaded guilty at a hearing in April 2023, and was today issued a fine of $50,000 at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.

Goulburn Valley Water Managing Director Steve Capewell reaffirmed GVW’s commitment to safety following the hearing.

“We accept the outcome from today’s hearing and take full responsibility for the accident,” Dr Capewell said.

“The safety of our people is one of our highest priorities and we’re committed to working right across our business to put safety first in everything we do.

“We continue to invest heavily in safety guards and infrastructure upgrades at our site, safety leadership training for our staff, and improvement on our safety process reviews and management.”
