Treated wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water's (GVW) Eildon Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) will be released into the nearby Goulburn River over coming days under wet weather approvals.
GVW Wastewater and Recycling Coordinator Stuart Harris said higher than average rainfall in the last couple of days had prompted the decision to release recycled water.
The release is expected to begin on Friday 9 October and only occur for a couple of days. GVW expects about 1 ML per day to be released.
“Allowances are made for Water Corporation EPA Licence holders to discharge treated wastewater to the environment during emergency situations under EPA approval,” Mr Harris said.
The water being released has been fully treated and meets Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Class C standards.
