Treated wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water's (GVW) Yea Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) will be released into the nearby Yea River over coming weeks under wet weather approvals.
GVW Wastewater and Recycling Coordinator Stuart Harris said higher than average rainfall in the first half of this year had prompted the decision to release recycled water, as it was no longer required for irrigation.
The release is expected to begin on Monday 19 September and finish in November, depending on climate conditions. GVW expects about 1 ML per day to be released.
“Allowances are made for Water Corporation EPA Licence holders to discharge treated wastewater to the environment during emergency situations under EPA approval,” Mr Harris said.
The water being released has been fully treated and meets Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Class C standards.
