Treated wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water's (GVW) Yea and Seymour Wastewater Management Facilities (WMF) will be released into the Yea River and Back Creek respectively over coming weeks in consultation with EPA.
GVW Wastewater and Recycling Coordinator Stuart Harris said the decision was made to release the recycled water due to higher than usual rainfall early in 2021 and recent rain events. The release is required to prevent embankment infrastructure damage to these facilities.
“Allowances are made for water corporation EPA Licence holders to discharge treated wastewater to the environment during emergency situations under EPA approval,” Mr Harris said.
The water being released has been fully treated and meets Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Class C standards.
