Fully treated recycled water from Goulburn Valley Water's Broadford Wastewater Management Facility will be released for a short period of time over the next couple of weeks.
High levels of rainfall over the past year and a wetter and cooler irrigation season, particularly during December to January, meant limited opportunities to reuse the treated wastewater and storage lagoons are nearing capacity.
The water being released is fully treated and meets Class C (or better) standards. It’s expected that up to 4ML/day will be released into Sunday Creek.
The release is expected to only be occurring for a short timeframe until storages are back to a safely manageable level, and water can once again be reused for irrigation.
The release is being carried out under an allowance of Goulburn Valley Water’s EPA licence, which permits temporary release of fully treated water during winter when wetter conditions limit irrigation reuse.
GVW has informed the EPA of this release and will monitor for any unexpected impacts on the environment. Strict water quality monitoring processes remain in place to protect the health of local communities and environments.
