Goulburn Valley Water is reinforcing its commitment to delivering reliable water and wastewater services with a major infrastructure investment in Shepparton’s rapidly expanding southern growth corridor.

A $4.38 million upgrade of a major sewerage pump station and construction of a new rising main will provide the capacity and resilience required to support continued growth across Kialla West, Kialla South and Kialla North.

The project comes as development in these areas accelerates, placing increasing pressure on existing infrastructure and highlighting the need for long-term, future-ready solutions.

Goulburn Valley Water General Manager Planning and Assets Regan Flanagan said the project reflects Goulburn Valley Water’s focus on delivering strong customer outcomes while planning for sustained population growth.

“Providing reliable wastewater services is fundamental to supporting healthy, growing communities,” Ms Flanagan said.

“As Shepparton’s southern areas continue to expand, it is critical that our infrastructure keeps pace. This project is about ensuring we can continue to deliver dependable services for our existing customers while creating the capacity needed for future development.”

The works will include a comprehensive upgrade of the existing pump station, featuring new pumps and a modern switchboard to improve system performance and operational efficiency. A new odour control facility, incorporating mechanical ventilation and activated carbon treatment, will also be installed to reduce impacts on nearby residents.

A central component of the project is the construction of a new sewer trunk main (rising main), extending from Archer Road (behind Mitta Court) into the Kialla and South Shepparton growth areas. This pipeline will play a critical role in managing increased wastewater flows and supporting the long-term functionality of the network.

“Our planning has identified this as the most effective long-term solution to strengthen the network in this area,” Ms Flanagan said.

Construction will involve a combination of underground boring and open excavation, including works beneath Broken Creek and the Goulburn Valley Highway, allowing critical infrastructure to be delivered while minimising disruption where possible.

Initial works are set to begin this month, with early stages focused on low-impact activities within road reserves and near residential properties. Property access will be maintained wherever possible, with residents to be notified in advance if works are expected to cause disruptions.

The project will also be featured on Goulburn Valley Water’s digital engagement platform, Water Matters, providing the community with an opportunity to follow progress and stay informed as works continue.
