The sewerage system is designed to transport sewage from toilets and drains to a Wastewater Management Facility (sewerage farm). Blockages occur when wipes, cooking oils and fats, and other things flushed down the toilet get caught in infrastructure such as sewer pipes or pump stations, or in tree roots that have grown into the sewer. Each year we spend a significant amount of money to remove blockages caused by things that shouldn’t be in the sewer, like sanitary products, cotton ear buds – even underwear and toys! Blockages can also be very costly to repair for homeowners if it’s in your home.

Remember flushable wipes aren’t flushable despite the name – they don’t break down like toilet paper does. Only flush the 3Ps – pee, poo and (loo) paper.

Don't Flush It!

The following items should be disposed of in the bin rather than the toilet. It is a great idea to have a bin located in your bathroom and toilet room.

  • Tissues, Flushable Wipes, Wipes, Paper Towel, Nappies, Tampons, Sanitary Pads, Condoms, Cotton Wool Balls, Cotton Buds, Band Aids, Medication, Syringes, Clothing, Rubbish, Toys, Razor Blades, Kitty Litter

Don't Rinse It!

The following items should not be disposed of down the plug hole. Kitchen waste should be scraped into the bin or compost. Remaining fats and oils should be mopped up with paper towel/tissues and disposed in the same way. Contact your local council for correct disposal of paints, motor oil and other industrial chemicals.

  • Fats, Oil, Grease, Food Scraps, Coffee Grounds, Tea Leaves, Medication, Paint, Thinners, Chemicals, Motor Oil, Petrol, Pesticides, Herbicides

What to do if there is a blockage?

If you are experiencing water not draining away in your sinks and toilet as it normally would, there may be a blockage in the sewerage system. If this blockage occurs in the pipes or fittings on your property, the property owner will need to engage a plumber to resolve the issue. If the blockage is in Goulburn Valley Water’s sewerage system, our team will resolve the issue.

If it is unclear where the blockage is please contact Goulburn Valley Water at any time on 1800 454 500.
