Goulburn Valley Water has lifted the Boil Water Notice for customers in Murchison and Murchison East.

No restrictions remain on the normal uses of drinking water that we provide.

Customers can be assured that the water supplied by Goulburn Valley Water is safe for all drinking, washing and food preparation purposes.

GVW acted promptly on Friday 5 September to issue the Boil Water Notice for Murchison and Murchison East customers following a change in the raw water quality sourced from the Goulburn River and identification of a treatment problem.

The treatment plant issue was rectified quickly to make sure that the water produced returned to specified limits. Treated water testing was carried out as soon as the issue was identified and the test results showed that the water quality met critical safety parameters.

Following verification of the results from further water testing, the decision was made to lift the boil water notice on Tuesday, 9 September, in consultation with the Department of Health.

We advise customers to flush taps for a few minutes prior to drinking, to replace water in household plumbing if it has not been used.

UPDATE - 10.00am Sunday 7 September

The Murchison and Murchison East Boil Water Notice remains in place.

The Boil Water Notice was issued Friday evening following a change in the raw water quality we source from the Goulburn River and identification of a treatment problem at the Water Treatment Plant.

This led to an increased treated drinking water turbidity above specified limits. Turbidity is the clarity or cloudiness of water caused by tiny particles like clay. Turbidity limits are important because high levels can shield the presence of microbes. This can make disinfection with chlorine less effective. So the priority is to lower turbidity levels to make sure that water is treated effectively for drinking.

Water quality testing was carried out as soon as the problem was discovered – the result of these tests came back last night and are showing that the water quality meets critical safety parameters. We will know more pending verification of testing results on Tuesday. The decision to lift the boil water notice will be made in consultation with the Department of Health. We will also start flushing the water reticulation system today.

Customers can continue accessing drinking water supplies between 10.00am and 5.00pm at the Murchison Water Treatment Plant, located on Stevenson Street. We have a limited supply of bottled water is available, and a water tanker is onsite – please bring clean suitable containers to fill. Water is also being tankered to provide a temporary water supply to critical users.

Residents must continue to boil water prior to drinking, preparing beverages, washing and preparing food, preparing baby formula, brushing teeth and making ice.

Thanks everyone for your continued cooperation and support. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Friday 5 September 2025

Recent monitoring of the Murchison water supply system detected an abnormality in the water treatment process. We are carrying verification sampling to assess the risk but at this stage we cannot guarantee that the water supplied to Murchison and Murchison East customers is fit for human consumption.

In consultation with the Department of Health, we advise all residents to boil their drinking water until further notice. The Boil Water Notice will remain in place until we are confident that there is no longer a risk to public health.

This advice has been issued as a precautionary measure.

Customers should boil water prior to drinking, preparing beverages, washing and preparing food, preparing baby formula, brushing teeth and making ice.

To ensure water is safe for consumption:

  • Heat water until a continuous and rapid stream of air-bubbles is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle (kettles with automatic shut-off switches are suitable).
  • Allow water to cool before use.
  • Store water in a clean, closed container for later use.
  • Caution should be taken to prevent scalding from boiling water.

Unboiled water can be used for:

  • Showering and bathing (avoid swallowing water).
  • Flushing toilets.
  • Washing dishes and clothes.

Consumption of unboiled water may lead to diarrhoea, cramps, headaches or other gastro-like symptoms. If you are concerned please contact your local doctor and advise them of this notice.

Infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and immuno-compromised people are particularly at risk.

Please communicate this information to others in your household and community.

We will provide regular updates.
