MARCH 2026
Project overview
Goulburn Valley Water is undertaking investigations into the future of the historic Wunghnu water tower following condition assessments that identified structural issues.
Constructed in 1906, the tower is a well known landmark within the township and an important part of Wunghnu’s local history.
Our work is focused on ensuring the site is safe for the community while carefully considering the tower’s heritage significance and the options available for the site.
Initial assessments carried out in 2023 identified structural concerns with the tower. As a precaution, temporary security fencing was installed around the structure while further investigations and technical assessments were undertaken.
Goulburn Valley Water has since been progressing additional engineering assessments and planning to better understand the condition of the tower and the potential options available for the site.
The next stage of the project will involve establishing a small community reference group to help inform the process.
About the Wunghnu water tower
The Wunghnu water tower was constructed in 1906 by renowned engineer General Sir John Monash through the Reinforced Concrete and Monier Pipe Construction Company.
The tower formed part of Wunghnu’s early water supply infrastructure, helping store water and maintain water pressure for the township.
It was decommissioned in the 1980s when the town’s water supply system was upgraded. Today, treated drinking water is supplied to Wunghnu from Numurkah and stored in a modern ground level storage tank located elsewhere in the township.
Although no longer part of the operating water network, the structure remains a historic water asset.
Community reference group
Goulburn Valley Water will soon invite Wunghnu residents to express their interest in joining a community reference group.
Further information will be made available here soon, including eligibility criteria and details on how to express your interest. Please check back on this page for updates.
