The water tank mural at our Kyabram Water Treatment Plant is a celebration of two of the town’s great passions – native fauna and water.

The mural celebrates the Kyabram community’s strong connection to native Australian fauna, using the six megalitre clear water storage tank at our site as the canvas. It attracts visitors from all over Australia who can view the work of art from the comfort of the decommissioned railway platform that runs along the treatment plant boundary.

Dedicated volunteers from the KY Project Committee first approached us in 2018 with an idea to form a partnership and turn the asset into a canvas for the artwork. They worked tirelessly to gain support and funds from the local community and the Victorian Government to bring the artwork and viewing platform to life, celebrating their achievement with an opening in 2022.

A commemoration stone on the viewing platform marks the opening and showcases the mural directly behind, which is flanked by a red brick tower built in the 1800s and the almost 100-year-old concrete tower still used to supply water to the town. In the photograph below KY Project Committee chairman Allan Weeks and GVW Managing Director Dr Steve Capewell are shown at the launch event.

Renowned artist Jimmy Dvate was commissioned to paint the mural on the tank. He is well known for his large-scale artwork and his advocacy for bringing public attention to the issue of threatened species conservation.

The mural has three parts and is themed around native flora and fauna found throughout the region. Sections of the artwork are visible from Albion Street, McCormick Road and Tulloh/Drum Streets.

On the tank you can find the Eastern long-necked turtle, Golden Whistler and Red-capped Robin. Also featured are the Yellow crimson Rosella, Major-Mitchell's cockatoo, Plains-wanderer, Spotted-tail Quoll, Blue skimmer dragonfly, Brolga and Bush stone-curlew.
